Local Surf Breaks & Forecasts

Cherry Grove Pier

All Levels

Cherry Grove sits at the north end of the Grand Strand with shifting sandbars at just about every block. It picks up south-swell energy better than most spots down the coast and tends to stay cleaner when NE winds are blowing. Lefts and rights, rarely crowded, open to all levels.

Best: Late summer, early fall, early spring. SE swell with NW offshore winds

North Myrtle Beach

Beginner

Wide open beachbreak with a friendly, low-key lineup. Less traffic than the Myrtle Beach breaks and plenty of room to spread out. Picks up NE and SE swells well. Good starting point for beginners and a solid option when you just want to get in the water without the crowds.

Best: Summer, small swell days

Myrtle Beach

All Levels

60 miles of beachbreak and most of it is pretty similar, but a few spots stand out. 29th Ave South is the local favorite, especially on a south swell. 65th Ave N and Dunes Cove are worth checking too. Springmaid Pier tends to catch more swell than the surrounding beaches with sandbars that shift and surprise you.

Best: Year-round, spring and fall swells. SE swell, NW offshore winds

Surfside Beach

Beginner

Surfside is low-key and consistent. SE swell with NW offshore winds is when it comes alive, best around mid to rising tide. The pier was rebuilt brand new in 2023. Calmer crowd than Myrtle Beach and a good spot for all levels.

Best: SE swell, mid to rising tide, winter most consistent

Garden City Pier

All Levels

Widely considered the best break on the Grand Strand. Consistent year-round, works on SE and NE swells at mid to high tide with NW offshore winds. Lefts and rights, but it gets crowded fast when it is working.

Best: Year-round. SSE swell, NW offshore winds, mid to high tide

Litchfield Beach

Beginner

Litchfield sits in a slightly recessed stretch of coast so it typically runs smaller than spots to the north and south. Wide beach, soft waves, quiet lineup -- ideal for beginners or an easy session when you want uncrowded water.

Best: Late summer, early fall, early spring

Pawleys Island

Intermediate

The best day-to-day wave on the south end of the Grand Strand. SE swells bring out its best -- long lefts on the south side of the pier that can barrel for a stretch when everything lines up. Works mid to incoming tide and tends to shut down once it gets overhead. Worth the drive when a swell is running.

Best: SE or NE swell, mid to incoming tide, late summer through fall
